A House in the Woods

the woods with changing views (步移景異的樹林);
a sloping site (有坡度的基地);
staged construction (分段興建).
Lower Level Plan

The project was first conceived as a rectangular geometry, but the rigidity of such a system did not allow the building forms to shift, drawing relationships with the surrounding elements.
Upper Level Plan

A geometry was sought that would provide the freedom and at the same time allow the project to look complete at the end of any phase of its serialized construction. A 90° grid with a 45° grid superimposed upon it was employed which allowed just such flexibilities.
South Elevation

Basic to the conception of this project were two other design axioms. First, the creation of a strong entrance sequence--the house revealing itself through movement. Second, the newly discovered geometric solution was to allow negative voids, which would change with each stage of the work, to become as important if not more so, than the positive volumes of the house itself.
Elevations

Section

The house finds its design success in its two and three dimensional flexibilities and the force that it draws from relating to the elements of the site.
Section
